If you were Ji-Li would you testify against your father?

What connections can you make with Ji-li's experience? For example, when you look at communism, can you find parallels in something like working on group projects, sports, lit circles, classroom discussions, etc.? What about historical connections?

  1. In group projects, the person with the most skill in the subject might have smart ideas, but they could be shot down for a worse one if the majority of the group is not as smart and agrees with the stupid decision. an analogy of communism and group projects is a peasant gets less work because they are supported in communism and a kid the struggles in a subject could not have to do as much work in a group project in the subject.

  2. In group projects, sports, lit circles, and classroom discussions there is always someone who rises up and maybe bosses people around. All of the other kids just do what the leader says and most of the time the kids obey. This is like when Ji-Li got bossed around by the red successors. It is also like how everyone obeys whatever Mao says.

  3. One connection is when people were convinced that people with white skin were better then dark skin. The white skinned people were told they were better so they acted like they were more important. Then everyone started following this until everyone thought it. The people with white skin took advantage of the people that were told they weren't as good as them. Another example is the giver of how they tried to make everyone equal but ended up making everything worse for them.

  5. In group projects and sports there always seems to be one ruler and maybe a few co leaders. The person who makes the decisions is who I consider the group leader. Mostly, people follow this person except for a few individuals. is is exactly how communism. Chairman Mao is the leader, the red guards are the co leaders, majority of the population follows these rules, and some people (rich people) disagree with it.

  6. I think that one parallel in my life is that in the US, there are the not so smart or poverty stricken people. And those people are looked down upon, maybe pitied for, but not really popular, like Yin Lan lan. But in the story, she gains power, but in the US, the poor never really get power. An analogy of Communism is when there are kids on a sports team. No one is favored, like the Lords, and the not so skilled people are usually played. Those not so goods play as much as the goods, and they have a sense of accomplishment, like the poor have a good feeling with they serve. The good people, though, are still played, but just as much as the bad people.

  7. When my family goes hiking, I will usually take the lead because I'm the one who can hike best. I'm the leader because I know how to lead the group, and I'll admit I don't like it when someone else will try to come up and lead also.

  9. I can connect this to The Giver. This book is about realizing that something perfect is not all it seems to be.
